One of the toughest struggles for individuals with allergies is finding safe places to eat. Being an allergy ally means being able to host inclusive dinners where you not only make everyone feel welcome, but also safe. The focus on food often demands extra planning and care, making it crucial for hosts and organizers to consider dietary needs when preparing meals and gatherings. Unfortunately, 1 in 13 children will be handling a food allergy this spring, according to FARE. We're here to help and give our top 10 tips on how to make sure everyone can enjoy the party!

1. Plan an Allergy-Safe Menu: Before cooking make sure you have dishes everyone can enjoy, many common dishes have the top 9 allergens in them, so be sure to use an allergy-friendly substitute, to make sure everyone can enjoy family recipes!

2. Communicate with Guests: Let everyone know about potential dietary restrictions before-hand. In the case others are bringing food provide guidance on ingredients to avoid or know what dishes certain guests should and shouldn't bring. This can allow for a good mix of safe dishes, making sure no one feels left out.

3. Label Each Dish: Clearly label each dish so everyone is aware of potential allergens. Best practice is to put a piece of tape on each and write in sharpie the potential allergies. If you're unsure don't be afraid to ask the dish bringer, you'll be giving others the gift of peace of mind by knowing what is safe and what can cause an allergic reaction.

4. Use Separate Serving Utensils: Assign dedicated utensils to each dish to be sure there isn't any cross-contamination going on at the table. A good practice is to have different colored utensils and inform guests what the colors mean. This can prevent any confusion and risk of reaction.

5. Start with Allergy-Friendly: Prepare all allergy-friendly dishes first so you can be sure they are being made on non-contaminated surfaces. Then store all dishes separately to avoid cross-contamination. This is a great tip for any meal and can help make those with allergies feel welcome.

6. Designate an Allergy-Friendly Zone: Set up a separate serving area or table for allergy-friendly foods. Every little precaution helps in making your home a safer place for the people you love.

7. Keep Emergency Supplies Handy: Accidents happen, be sure you have an epi-pen nearby in case something goes wrong. This is especially important if you are hosting someone with severe allergies.

9. Practice Gratitude: Take a moment to express gratitude for a safe, inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy the meal. The party isn't about the food, but bringing together family and friends, be sure to recognize that.
